SUMMARY:Media Parenting to Prevent Youth Health Risk Behavior by Joy Gabrielli\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Learning outcomes: \n\n Participants will be able to discuss mental health services research methods.\n Participants will be able to use and interpret inferential and descriptive statistics. This will enable them to interpret statistical analysis presented in published research and to better interpret their own data.\nParticipants will be able to describe current research trends through visiting speakers and a review of literature. This will enable researchers to remain innovative and current in their projects.\nParticipants will be able to maintain high standards of quality\, adherence to protocols\, and high standards of data acquisition by learning to evaluate research proposals\, solve common implementation problems\, keep projects on schedule\, plan and carry out data analysis and dissemination activities.\n\nJoy Gabrielli is a clinical child psychologist and postdoctoral research fellow through the T32 “”Science of Co-Occurring Disorders”” training program. She has worked in the Dartmouth Media Lab as well as with Drs. Catherine Stanger and Lisa Marsch at the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health to identify and intervene on modifiable environmental risk factors for adolescent substance use. She has conducted studies on both media related risks for adolescent substance use and application of novel technologies to address risk factors for youth substance use youth aging out of foster care. She is particularly interested in developing interventions for youth and families to mitigate risk for youth substance use. More recently\, Joy has worked to develop a media parenting preventative intervention to support effective media management in the home setting. Her presentation will cover preliminary studies on youth exposure to alcohol marketing across media venues as well as parental R-movie restriction to reduce youth risk for alcohol use as the foundation for more recent qualitative and behavioral observation work she has done to understand features of parenting that could be targeted in future interventions. \nMobile and Electronic sign-in for CME credit will be required for Behavioral Health Research Seminar Series; SMS Activity Code: Will be provided at the Seminar \nIf you can’t attend in person\, you may join via Webex on your computer. \nMeeting number/Access code:632 747 028\nMeeting password:Dartmouth2017 \nJoin by phone\n1-877-668-4490 Call-in toll-free number (US/Canada)\n1-408-792-6300 Call-in toll number (US/Canada)\nAccess code: 638 501 558

SUMMARY:Appropriate Opioid Prescribing for Acute Pain after Surgery\, Dr. Richard Barth Jr.
DESCRIPTION:During this webinar\, Dr. Barth\, Chief of General Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center\, will discuss 3 recent papers that evaluated opioid prescribing after outpatient and inpatient general surgical operations. Briefly\, the papers reported on:\n· the evaluation of variation in opioid prescribing\, how much of prescribed opioids were used (over prescription)\, and proposed prescribing guidelines;\n· the results of educating surgeons about the findings from the first paper and the observed decrease in opioid prescribing; and\n· the evaluation of opioid prescribing and use after inpatient operations; which showed that home use was best predicted by the number of pills taken the day prior to discharge.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cultivating Change Talk\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:“Whether in the context of a brief intervention or in an ongoing counseling relationship\, when patients talk about their intrinsic motivation\, they are more likely to make that change. Motivational Interviewing encourages “change talk\,” language a client or patient uses that favors change. Recognizing\, responding to\, and eliciting change talk are three crucial skills practitioners must develop and apply to support clients or patients.” \nPresenter:\nAlex Waitt is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and works regionally in Western Pennsylvania and nationally supporting organizations to integrate Motivational Interviewing into their work practices\, both clinically and administratively.
