SUMMARY:Observational data for biomedical discovery
DESCRIPTION:Talk Summary\nObservation is the starting point of discovery. Based on observations\, scientists form\nhypotheses that are then tested and evaluated. In the information-age\, trillions of observations\nare being made and recorded every day – from online social interactions to emergency room\nvisits. With so much data readily available\, generating hypotheses using a single scientist’s\nmind is no longer sufficient. Instead\, we must turn to computational algorithms to “mine” for new\nhypotheses and relationships. Data mining is an emerging field dedicated to training algorithms\nto recognize patterns in enormous sets of data to automatically identify new hypotheses. In this\ntalk\, I will discuss how we use data mining algorithms to identify unexpected effects of drugs\nused singly and in combination with other drugs. Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are an important\nand understudied public health concern. Drug-drug interactions are difficult and expensive to\nstudy because of the complex combinatorial nature to their investigation. I developed new\nmethods for mining clinical data\, and then discovered and validated two previously unknown\nnovel drug-drug interactions. In the first method\, published in 2011\, I found that paroxetine\n(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and pravastatin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) together\ncause hyperglycemia. In the second method\, published in 2016\, I found that ceftriaxone\n(cephalosporin antibiotic) and lansoprazole (proton-pump inhibitor) are associated with\nprolonged QT syndrome (LQTS). In both cases\, I used a combination of data mining and\nlaboratory experiments to discover and validate the new DDI. These studies are the first to use\nbig patient data to discover a drug interaction and then use prospective experiments to validate\nthe findings. Using integrative informatics methods\, we are able to discover drug-drug\ninteractions that no one considered possible before. In many cases these experiments can be\nexecuted in high-throughput and by robotic systems\, with the ultimate goal of automating the\nscientific method. \nSpeaker: Dr. Nicholas Tatonetti \nPresentation Access \nMeeting ID: 503-779-5102

SUMMARY:Advances in technology-based contingency management in the treatment of substance-use disorders
DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation: Since the first use of information technology to deliver contingency management (CM) to promote smoking cessation in 2005\, technological advances have rapidly expanded the geographical reach of CM from local to nationwide\, permitted detection of smoking and alcohol using mobile phones\, and allowed automation of all aspects of technology-based CM. Recently\, several researchers have argued that although CM is one of the most efficacious psychosocial treatments for substance use disorders\, it is severely underutilized in clinical care for addictions in general. Technology-based CM may be one way to increase its use and impact on individual and population health. I will discuss recent efforts to attain these goals. \nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://dartmouth.zoom.us/j/99546994736 \nMeeting ID: 995 4699 4736 \nPassword: 647231

SUMMARY:Rali NH: CODE 3/Rali Cares Virtual Trailer Tour Hidden in plain sight
DESCRIPTION:Senate President Donna Soucy\, and CODE3 Executive Director\, Joe Abdalla will join Makin’ It Happen for an important discussion about prescription drug safety. 50% of teens believe that prescription drugs are much safer than illegal street drugs—60% to 70% say that home medicine cabinets are their source of drugs. With the pandemic cancelling DEA Rx Takeback Events\, it is more important than ever to learn about the types of prescriptions that can be abused\, and how to keep them safe in your home\, and the homes of your patients. We will also talk about safe disposal options. \nFor this forum session we are delighted to have Senate President Donna Soucy join us to help kick-start the discussion and share why she supports this innovative approach to educating and engaging adults around the important information of being informed about prescription drug safety. Joe Abdalla\, Executive Director of the Code 3 initiative will present an overview of the Virtual Trailer Tour which will include clips of the video and details around how this virtual tour provides a great learning opportunity for parents and partners\, alike. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing: Conversation and Compassionate Listening and its Impact During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:This is a conversation in Motivational Interviewing\,(MI)\, to illustrate the power of one person in the lives of the people we serve. Motivational Interviewing awakens one’s inner sense of purpose and enthusiasm for the hard work being done during this health care crisis. \nObjectives\n– Describe the characteristics of influential people\n– Become aware of compassionate listening and its impact on suffering\n– Discuss the impact of difficult judgement of others \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Technology-Based Interventions: Navigating New Models to Enhance and Expand Service Delivery
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will review the use of technology-based interventions related to treating individuals with substance use disorders and providing recovery support services focused on asynchronous tools\, such as social media\, blogs\, podcasts\, online support groups\, videos\, and text messaging. Finally\, recommendations for clinicians and peer recovery coaches for developing their own tools will be highlighted. \nAccording to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health\, almost 90% of individuals with a substance use disorder (SUD) did not receive treatment services\, with this number remaining relatively unchanged for several years. Stigma and bias regarding entering care and access to services (geographic or time constraints) have contributed to these low numbers. Furthermore\, the recent public health concerns given COVID-19 and the importance of social distancing have made access to services even more difficult\, resulting in SUD treatment and recovery support providers seeking viable alternatives to in-person service delivery. Advances in technology and increased availability to the internet have initially addressed this access issue for treatment and recovery support providers through the use of videoconferencing platforms to deliver services synchronously. However\, in many cases patients and peers are still unable to access treatment and support services on a regular basis and are augmenting their need for additional services by using apps\, social media\, automated behavioral intervention technologies (educational websites\,) online support groups\, etc. Behavioral health professionals benefit from understanding these tools\, how/why patients are using them\, and the best practices for adding them to their toolbox. While not replacing the need for treatment and recovery services\, technology-based interventions can serve as a ‘practice or support extender’. \nRegistration Deadline: July 7\, 2020\nRegister\nFor questions about this webinar\, please contact NFARtec staff at  workwise@casat.org or call 775-784-6265 to be directed to the correct individual.

SUMMARY:Counseling Emerging Adults With Substance Use Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Description\nSubstance use developmentally peaks during emerging adulthood (ages 18-25).
