ABOUT THE TRAINER:
Dr. Patricia Cioe is a dedicated clinician, researcher, and educator whose work
addresses one of the most pressing health issues for vulnerable communities:
tobacco use. As a Family Nurse Practitioner and Associate Professor at URI, she
bridges the gap between research and practice. Dr. Cioe’s research program is
dedicated to smoking cessation, with a specific focus on improving the longevity
and quality of life for people living with HIV. She develops and tests innovative,
practical strategies—including financial incentives and medication management—
to help these individuals quit smoking. Her leadership in the field of addiction
nursing and her commitment to hands-on patient care make her a vital voice in
public health.
DESCRIPTION:
This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of vaping for health care and allied health
professionals. It explores the structure and function of vaping devices, the composition of e-
liquids, and current patterns of use across different populations. The session examines the short-
and long-term health effects associated with vaping, including respiratory, cardiovascular, and
neurological risks, as well as vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). It also discusses the role of
vaping in tobacco harm reduction and smoking cessation, and offers practical approaches for
patient screening, education, and counseling.
