Social and Structural Determinants of Mental Health, Substance Use and Treatment

This presentation will introduce key concepts related to the social and structural determinants of health and how they apply to substance use disorders with particular focus on implications for rural communities.

Learning objectives:

  • Define social and structural determinants of health
  • Identify how social determinants lead to inequity in health, healthcare, and outcomes
  • Identify ways that social determinants impact substance use and treatment
  • Discuss how COVID-19 has impacted social determinants of health and substance use
  • Discuss implications for clinical care and advocacy for individuals and communities

The University of Vermont Center on Rural Addiction (UVM CORA) presents the Community Rounds Workshop Series which is a live webinar series provided monthly. The goal is to provide opportunities for health professionals to learn, ask questions, and discuss topics related to science-based best practices for substance use disorder. Participants can expect about 45 minutes of presentation followed by 15 minutes for questions and conversation. A recording of the session and slides will be shared following the presentation. Registered participants will also be added to UVM CORA’s listserv and receive notifications for future events.
