During this webinar, Dr. Barth, Chief of General Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, will discuss 3 recent papers that evaluated opioid prescribing after outpatient and inpatient general surgical operations. Briefly, the papers reported on:
· the evaluation of variation in opioid prescribing, how much of prescribed opioids were used (over prescription), and proposed prescribing guidelines;
· the results of educating surgeons about the findings from the first paper and the observed decrease in opioid prescribing; and
· the evaluation of opioid prescribing and use after inpatient operations; which showed that home use was best predicted by the number of pills taken the day prior to discharge.
