A Multigenerational Approach to Prevention & Treatment of Substance Use Disorders
December 2, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Summary: Through both environmental and genetic factors, substance use disorders frequently perpetuate from one generation to another within families. Treating individuals struggling with a substance use disorder in isolation often represents a missed opportunity to provide both treatment and preventive measures for others in their family who have been directly impacted by, are at risk for or also struggle with a substance use disorder. Participants will:
- Recognize the role genes and shared environment play in multigenerational perpetuation of substance use disorder
- Understand familial risk factors for substance use
- Identify key stages of the individual and family life-cycle for multigenerational interventions
- Increase confidence in being able to invite family members to support treatment and participate in preventive measures
- Recognize opportunities for prevention of further harm from substance use disorders, no matter the age or life stage of the individual whom they are treating.
